I think it would be hard to name the best players in each group since it is such a "team" sport. Do you say the one with the most kills is the best, but they couldn't get all of those kills without a good pass and a good set first. Everyone contributes equally to the success of the team. Each player has their own talents that can't work without the other players.

At what age do college recruiters start looking at kids? Do the coaches "drop" names to them, or do they find the talent themselves?

honestly coaches begin looking as early as 14. this is obviously not big time commitment to a player, but they notice that early. real recruiting cannot happen until they are juniors. and coaches try to use their connections as much as possible to get names out.
